Fighting in Gaza escalates; Death toll surges
The Israeli military has focused its shelling on a neighborhood of Gaza City. That has sparked the fiercest battle since Israel’s latest attack on the Gaza Strip began earlier this month.
The number of dead is surging on both sides.
Israeli forces expanded their ground operation in the Gaza Strip on Saturday night and mounted an intensive bombardment that lasted through Sunday.
The Shijaiyah neighborhood is home to tunnels dug by the Islamic militant organization Hamas to fire rockets into Israel.
Palestinian health officials say the latest offensive has left at least 60 people dead, including civilians. The death toll since Israel’s air raids began is 415.
The dead and wounded were taken to a hospital. Bereaved relatives expressed anger and grief at a mortuary.
Nearly 20,000 people fled the attacks on Sunday alone. That brings the total number of evacuees to 81,000.
On the same day, 13 Israeli soldiers died.
Meanwhile, efforts to revive a ceasefire are underway. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is in the Middle East visiting Qatar, which holds influence over Hamas.
US President Barack Obama says he will soon send Secretary of State John Kerry to Egypt, which is a mediator between Israel and Hamas.
