Kenyan president appears at ICC hearing
Kenya’s president has become the first sitting head of state to appear at the International Criminal Court. Uhuru Kenyatta is accused of crimes against humanity.
Kenyatta appeared at a hearing of The Hague-based court on Wednesday. He was elected president last year.
Prosecutors say he orchestrated ethnic violence that left more than 1,000 people dead in the aftermath of Kenya’s presidential election in 2007.
The prosecutors told the court that Kenyatta has been blocking evidence of his involvement in inciting the violence. Kenyatta made no comment.
About 100 Kenyan supporters gathered around the court, saying their president is innocent. Kenyatta’s lawyers are demanding the case be dropped.
Prosecutors have admitted they are struggling to get the Kenyan government to hand over new evidence, so it remains to be seen if the trial will proceed.
