ISIS Militants may have seized one-third of Ayn al-Arab
Kurdish forces fighting the Islamic State militant group say the Sunni extremists may have seized up to one-third of Ayn al-Arab, the northern Syrian city on the border with Turkey.
An NHK reporter learned of the situation from a senior officer in the Kurdish forces on Thursday over the telephone.
The United States and its allies have been bombing the armored vehicles and bases of the militants around the city. The militants are battling Kurdish forces there in an attempt to seize the city.
The Kurdish officer says between one-fourth and one-third of Ayn al-Arab has been completely taken by the Islamic State militants.
He said the enemy is advancing toward the city center, but that food supplies are getting scarce with no water or electricity.
The Kurdish forces are appealing for more international military support, alerting that residents would be slaughtered once the city falls to the militants.
