Thousands gather again at rally in Hong Kong
Thousands of people are gathering around the Hong Kong government building on Friday night. This is in response to a call for a rally by student leaders.
The students reacted angrily to the Hong Kong government’s decision on Thursday night to cancel talks with student leaders scheduled for Friday.
The government announced that no dialogue will be held for the time being. It said talks were seriously undermined by the students’ appeal earlier on Thursday for people to rally.
The amount of sit-in protesters around the government office building has decreased in the past few days.
But on Friday night the numbers appear to have grown again as thousands of people took to the streets. They are listening to speeches by protest leaders.
Both pro-democracy demonstrators and the city government are reportedly maintaining their position of seeking to resolve the situation through dialogue.
However, they continue to differ. The Hong Kong government is refusing to accept the students’ demand to retract a plan on the direct election of the city’s chief executive in 2017. Pro-democracy candidates would be effectively barred from running for the post under the plan announced on August 31st by the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress.
