US President Barack Obama has issued an executive order giving his government power to sanction foreign individuals and organizations involved in cyberattacks that threaten national security.

The sanctions program issued on Wednesday is aimed at hackers who steal personal information and trade secrets or who engage in attacks disrupting computer networks. It also covers companies that knowingly use stolen trade secrets.

The US government will be allowed to freeze assets and bar trading activities of any entity involved in destructive cyberattacks within the United States.

Obama said in a statement that such threats pose serious economic and national security challenges.

The move follows a series of cyberattacks in the United States.
