EU, Morocco agree to deepen bilateral cooperation
The European Union (EU) and Morocco have agreed to deepen bilateral ties and cooperations in various areas, leaders of both sides decided at a summit over the weekend.
The EU and Morocco stressed the need for the latter “to reach optimum proximity to the EU” by means of political modernization and opening up the economy, the leaders of both sides told a press conference followed the first ever bilateral summit in the historic city of Granada in south Spain.
European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso stressed the importance of bilateral ties and agreed to have them further deepened, adding that they serve as an example for the Mediterranean region,
Both sides promised to step up negotiations on easing trade restrictions, develop trans-European transport and energy networks, and cooperate in the development of renewable energy.
The leaders also discussed immigration and Middle East conflict.
Spain has made great efforts to initiate the EU-Morocco summit, hoping the summit will serve as a bridge between the EU and Africa.
Its immediate goal is to discuss EU-Morocco economic cooperation in specific areas, while its long-term objective is to set up a common economic area.
Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, whose country holds the EU presidency, European Council President Herman Van Rompuy and other European representatives, attended the summit.
