Rising tensions undermine counter-terror

Security source released, on Monday, that five Niger soldiers were killed in an attack by unidentified gunmen close to Niger’s border with Mali. The raid close to Oualam, (north of Niger’s capital Niamey) took place in an area where al Qaeda’s North African wing (AQIM) operates, and also groups of Tuareg rebels.

Clashes between soldiers and armed gangs are frequent along the uranium-exporting country’s border with Mali. This event, and others in  the northwest region of Africa , confirms the growing tensions which undermine any coordination and  efforts against terrorism and trafficking in the region.
