Somalia: Much of food aid diverted

By on March 12, 2010

Up to half the food aid intended for the millions of hungry people in Somalia is being diverted to corrupt contractors, radical Islamic militants and local U.N. workers, according to a U.N. Security Council report. Some 3.7 million people in Somalia deprived of this aid, because the food distribution program, in the Horn of Africa nation, has been plagued by fighting and humanitarian suffering for nearly two decades.
The Charges that food aid was being diverted first surfaced in 2009, then the U.S has reduced funding to Somalia, fearing that aid was falling into the hands of the Islamist group al- Shabab, linked probably to Al-Qaeda.

As a consequence, Somalia’s government is readying a military offensive to combat the chaotic situation and retake control over Mogadishu, even the U.N report has stated that “security forces remain ineffective, disorganized and corrupt”…
