Toyota Tsusho plans oil pipeline through E. Africa
Toyota Tsusho Corp. is planning to build a 1,400-kilometer crude oil pipeline extending from Sudan to Kenya, The Yomiuri Shimbun has learned.
The pipeline would carry a projected 450,000 barrels of oil a day from Juba in southern Sudan to Lamu, a Kenyan city on the Indian Ocean. The estimated cost of the pipeline reportedly is about 1.5 billion dollars (about 135 billion yen).
The company, a member of the Toyota Motor Corp.-led business group, plans to hand control of the pipeline to the Kenyan government in 20 years.
Toyota Tsusho has sounded out the Kenyan government and other authorities about the plan and is seeking to help southern Sudan become capable of supporting itself economically with a view to obtaining oil export rights.
The Sudanese government is working to revive its economy through the exploitation of its crude oil reserves.
