Madagascar: Sanctions and feasibility

By on March 18, 2010
The African Union imposes sanctions on one hundred nine people in all, including members of government, senior officials, some generals and senior officers of the armed forces and judiciary for their interference with the process ending the crisis in Madagascar. The sanctions were announced on Wednesday, March 17. The measures taken by the Organization include travel bans, freezing of financial assets and denial of accreditation to international organizations. The African Union estimates that it has been sufficiently patient. The Commissioner of the African Union in charge of Peace and Security said that sanctions could be reduced, suspended or otherwise strengthened following the attitude adopted by the Rajoelina’s team. However,

analysts estimate and conclude that these measures are perhaps not best suited to an island more oriented towards Asia, rather than the continent.
