Senegalese president reaffirms intention to run for third term
By African Bulletin on March 22, 2010

“I am going to run for another term in 2012. I know that I am not youthful but I have the energy to lead the country. I pray that God gives the energy and good health to be able to contest in 2012 for another term,” he declared before the thousands of his supporters turning up at the Presidential Palace to congratulate him.
Wearing in yellow and blue, the supporters of the ruling party and their allies assembled, after a peaceful march through the streets of the town, at the front of the palace to thank Wade for his numerous achievements.
When he stood on the podium, the Senegalese president thanked the population for their support and termed his record as positive.
“Senegal has seen progress in every sector. No African country can now compare with us except in the area of energy. Everything has been successful except the energy sector,” he said, adding that the issue of energy will soon be tackled.
Wade was elected president in 2000 and re-elected in 2007. In 2001, Senegal adopted a new constitution reducing the presidential term from seven years to five years.
