Guinea-Bissau: Unstructured Army, Recurrent instability
By African Bulletin on April 2, 2010
Several countries and international organizations have denounced the coup of some military in Guinea-Bissau, and condemn, in the strongest terms, the measures taken by some elements of the armed forces on Thursday 1st April. Prime Minister Carlos Gomes Junior was arrested in the morning, before being escorted to his residence.
The Chief of Staff and forty officers were also arrested. The power has changed hands in the army, and Deputy Chief of Staff, Indjai Antonio, is appointed by the military to handle the situation. The stabilization of Guinea Bissau through a peaceful and democratic process remains crucial and with such events, it prove to be a distant dream. The situation was very confused Thursday night, and the French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner, denounced the “coup”, and expressed his concern for those arrested in this small country in West Africa.
