RDC/Opposition: Fearing constitutional amendment
By African Bulletin on April 2, 2010
The Congolese opposition expressed concerns about the possibility of a constitutional amendment. The main leaders of the parliamentary opposition have rejected any idea of amending certain provisions of the Constitution, including those relating to the mandate of the Head of State.
This development comes after an inter-ministerial meeting which had discussed the possibility of a constitutional amendment. The secretary general of the Movement for the Liberation of Congo (MLC) said that the meeting was informal and has no legal power. “The masks have fallen,” he has said. Another Deputy of the presidential majority and specialist in constitutional issues agrees. He stated that the question of the mandate of the President of the Republic, as the republican form of the government and the representative form of the government are erected in intangible issues. These issues are not at all in the agenda of the National Assembly or the Senate.
