Somalia: When Somali Islamists threaten, the music fades
Under pressure from the Hezb al-Islam, the 14 radio stations in Mogadishu have been forced to “Silent” any form of music.
On April 3, Hezb al-Islam, one of the main Islamist insurgent groups in Somalia, which controls several districts of Mogadishu, had threatened to attack the radio-stations which still play music, and they had pronounced a period of ten days for their “directive” to be applied.
This Tuesday, April 13, according to the National Union of Somali Journalists (UNSOJ), the 14 radio stations in Mogadishu, whether located in areas controlled by government forces or Islamists forces, have complied with the order, fearing reprisals. “We are witnessing an independent media muzzling», laments UNSOJ.
