Chad/Sudan: Re-opening Land Border

By on April 15, 2010

Located 34 km from El Geneina (Sudan), Adré (Chad) was the gateway to Chad of goods from Sudan in 2003 before the outbreak of war in Darfur. This city (Adré) provided enough revenue taxes to the local government and covers administrative expenses to other towns in eastern Chad.

In May 2008, after an attack on the outskirts of its capital, led by rebels from Darfur, Sudan has accused Chad of being behind the attack and Khartoum broke off diplomatic relations with Ndjamena. Chad had retailed by banning trade with Sudan.

The diplomatic quarrel had ended in November 2008 and by early 2010, the two countries announced the normalisation of their relations. The land border between Chad and Sudan, which was closed since 2003, is reopened to traffic now between the towns of Adré (eastern Chad) and El-Geneina, Darfur (western Sudan) to the benefit of the two populations.
