DRC: The U.S-E.U Economic Issues
It started with the Turkish President visit to give a new impetus to bilateral cooperation, and was followed by the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Johnnie Carson; and then by the Governor of Canada, Michaelle Jean.
The U.S. visit was placed under the sign of the security, stability and revitalisation of relationships.
Johnnie Carson emphasised on the strategic role of the DRC in Africa. To do this, a commando battalion of rapid intervention is trained in Kisangani, Orientale Province, under the auspices of AFRICOM. This will contribute to the capacity building and professionalisation of the Congolese army; factors essential to devote the stability of the national institutions.
The Governor of Canada, in different words, stressed that stability in Africa requires peace in the DRC. Simple words, but important to emphasize the historical responsibility of the DRC in this continent.
Indeed, economic issues and improving business climate were also discussed. This is to say that the Great Lakes won’t be any more of European concern only. The United States has decided to be present in the light of economic issues. This “diplomatic activity” is a perfect illustration of the competition between on the one hand the U.S. and Canada, and the on other the European countries led by France, Britain and Belgium; and Central to these economic issues, the DRC.
