Sudan/UN: The elections qualified as a model for peace
By African Bulletin on April 22, 2010
The United Nations has declared that the general elections of Sudan are a model for the implementation of the Darfur Peace Agreement (CPA) between northern and southern Sudan.
The special U.N representative for Sudan, Mr. menkerios, spoke about this after his meeting with Sudanese President Omar El-Bashir. “We are pleased that, despite all the problems … the process will be pursued peacefully, “said Menkerios to the reporters. He refused to assess the elections which were merely of Sudanese concern and responsibility, and stated that the U.N’s role was only to provide technical and logistical assistance. He added that he discussed with Sudanese President the readiness and availability of the two parts of the CPA, including the National Congress Party (NCP) and the Sudanese People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) for the referendum on self-determination of southern Sudan, presumed on January 2011.
