Djibouti: A Central Position, Envied and Enviable

The scenario is far from being unrealistic: in June 2008, a neighboring country invades the small Republic of Djibouti, located in a strategic gateway to the Red Sea and was moving towards the capital. This “Aggression” was launched by Eritrea against Ras Doumeira (north), following a border conflict between the two countries.
Therefore France had immediately “provided logistic, medical and intelligence support to the Djiboutian Armed Forces (ADF), under the defense agreement assistance, concluded between the two countries in the context of the mutual defense accords of 1977.
Today, the area is still occupied by the Eritrean army, while France and Djibouti are at the same tempo and feel that the conflict could be solved by diplomatic means, better than others”, has stated the Air Major General Aviation, Thierry Caspar Fille-Lambie, commander of the French Forces in Djibouti (FFDJ). Meanwhile, the bulk of the Djiboutian troops are in fact deployed along the border, facing the Eritrean army.
Djibouti has a strategic location on the Gulf of Aden, a crucial maritime corridor for world trade, and serves as home port for the European fleet combating the piracy in Somalia, launched in December 2008.
France and the United States have permanent bases, and the largest overseas one for France, with nearly 3,000 men.
The country has indeed become central in combating terrorism in the Horn of Africa since the attacks of September 11, 2001 in the United States. Similarly, Djibouti is increasingly used to prepare French troops deployed for overseas operations, including Afghanistan…
