Somalia: Moscow adheres to sanctions against Piracy

By on April 28, 2010
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed an order of fulfilment to the terms of the U.N 1844 Security Council resolution, introducing sanctions against legal and physical Somali entities.
The order prohibits the export of military goods from Russia to Somalia, providing consulting services, as well as entry and transit through Russian territory of persons designated by the UN 751 Security Council resolution.

These measures do not cover the Russian military products to combat piracy in Somalia, and defence equipments temporarily routed by UN forces, the media and humanitarian organizations.
The Somali authorities failed to stop piracy because of the fifteen years civil war in the country. Warships from 16 countries including Russia, and other NATO vessels are participating in the naval operation against piracy and protect cargo ships in the Gulf of Aden.
306 pirate attacks were reported worldwide in 2008 including 136 off east Africa, and 300 from first of January to 30 September 2009, including 160 in East African waters. The U.N report concludes that hijacked cargo ships is less than before, thanks to international efforts, but the number of attempted attacks is still rising.
