UN/AU: Coordination Agreement in Somalia

By on April 30, 2010
The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the UN Political Office for Somalia (UNPOS) work together to coordinate efforts and assist the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia (TFG) to pursue dialogue, reconciliation, restore security conditions, and establish government institutions capable of serving Somalis.

The Djibouti agreement stipulated that a cease-fire should come into force in Somalia 30 days after signature, but up to day, the violence is still present. Actually, the AMISOM is about 3450 Ugandan and Burundi troops on the ground, supporting the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) of Somalia to stabilise the country, but the A.U continues to ask the U.N to take over from AMISOM as soon as possible.
The U.N Representative for Somalia explained that the three organizations are working to figure out how it is possible to approach the victims of violence and other abuses in Somalia. It is a new initiative aiming to strengthen the coordination and coherence, for implementing adequate measures on the ground; however the IGAD’s special envoy, Kipruto Kirwa, said that the problems in Somalia require new and systematic approaches.
