Togo: Prime Minister Gilbert Houngbo resigns

The Togolese Prime Minister Gilbert Houngbo Fossoun handed, on Wednesday, his resignation to President Faure Gnassingbe who wants a new government of “broad political opening”. The political discussions will be held with the entire political class to form a new government based on broad political opening,” said the Togolese presidency.
The resignation of Mr. Houngbo came a day after the swearing in of Mr. Gnassingbe, who was reelected for another term of five years during the presidential election on March 4. However, the president asked him to ensure the current business until the appointment of a new prime minister. Gilbert Houngbo Fossoun is former Secretary General of the United Nations and Director of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for Africa. Houngbo was appointed as Prime Minister in September 2008.
