Nigeria – Cameroon: Towards common border delimitation

By on May 18, 2010
The border delimitation process between Nigeria and Cameroon is underway, said an official of the National Commission of the border (NBC).

In the process, originally Cameroonian villages have been placed on the Nigerian side, while some other Nigerians have been handed over to Cameroon. Both countries will discuss problems of concerned communities affected by the delimitation, and resolve all matters before the end of this year.
“During the boundary delimitation, we think that the road which runs from Chad to Cameroon, and lies near the Nigerian- Cameroon  border, could actually be the new border between our two countries, but we still need to discuss it with Cameroonians”, a senior Nigerian said.
Under an order issued October 19, 2002 by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, Nigeria handed the Bakassi Peninsula to Cameroon. Subsequently, a Joint Nigeria and Cameroon Committee, responsible for implementing the decision of the ICJ, has been put in place the same year. Since then, this committee meets frequently to address all important issues between Nigeria and Cameroon.
