By African Bulletin on May 18, 2010
The U.N Security Council delegation arrived in Kinshasa for a mission of information and dialogue with different actors on the political and socio-economic development in DRC. “The purpose of the visit to the DRC is to initiate a dialogue with the Congolese authorities, the civil society, the population, the Congolese and foreign aid agencies on the future of the presence of MONUC in DRC.
The head of the Security Council delegation, the French Ambassador Gerard Araud, said that MONUC’s mandate will be renewed at the end of May. He said that the dialogue with the Congolese authorities, of the Congolese civil society members, local and international NGO’s representatives will focus on the security situation.
“MONUC will not remain indefinitely in the DRC; it will leave once a stable situation is attained. Currently, the security situation in DRC remains fragile, so there still is necessity to keep MONUC, and therefore any withdrawal must be done according to the changing situation on the ground “, Mr. Araud said.
