South Africa: World Cup 2010 and vulnerability to terrorism

By on June 1, 2010
The African Institute for international affairs (SAITA) and other experts consider that South Africa is vulnerable to terrorist attacks during the Football World Cup which will take place from June 11th till July 11th, has reported daily paper, the Sunday Times.

“We are really vulnerable to suicide attacks and bombing-cars. Many indications let understand that the network Al-Qaida might plot one of its attacks against the World cup event “, asserted Van Rooyen, a researcher of the “SAITA”.
South Africa will be very professional in its reaction” but the counter-intelligence is the Achilles’ heel “, he underlined.
Last Wednesday, a National Operation Centre was lunched up in a military base in Pretoria. This Centre is in charge of coordinating the deployment of all the different South African security and intelligence organs to assure a safe secured World cup event, in particular the protection of the teams and the officials.
A black list containing about forty most suspected terrorists would have been established, indicates the same South–African journal.
