By on June 18, 2010
The movement is symbolic, but in Kinshasa, the event is historic. Hundred of U.N Senegalese peacekeeping force withdrew on Wednesday from the Democratic Republic of Congo. The ceremony of departure took place in Kisangani, in Northern part of DRC.

This first departure of the MONUC troops fit within the framework of phased reduction of UN forces, decided by the Security Council in its resolution 1925. On May 27th of this year, the UN Security Council had indeed authorized the withdrawal of 2000 UN peacekeeping force by the end of June 2010 and approved the modification of its mandate, starting on July 1st. By that time, the MONUC will change the name and will become MONUSCO.
On the eve of the festivities of the fiftieth anniversary, this departure will certainly be appreciated by president Kabila, who had wished a more massive and faster withdrawal of the blue berets from his country. But he will need a little of patience, the international community considers the security situation in the country is not stabilised enough.
