Guinea Conakry: The ballot of all dreams

By on June 28, 2010
guineaThe Guineans participated massively and peacefully last Sunday, in the first free election since the independence in 1958. They were impatient to see the military leaving the power, nine months after the massacre of opponents by the army in Conakry.
In this very opened ballot, three runners are given top seeded. Alpha Condé, an opponent of all the regimes since the independence. As well as former Prime Ministers Sidya Touré (1996-1999) and Cellou Dalein Diallo (2004-2006) who declared that it would be necessary “to respect the choice of the ballot boxes, whatever it is ” and judged that the elections took place “in the wished transparency”.

Vote-counting is already under way. A preliminary tally is due on Tuesday, temporary results should not be known before Wednesday and the proclamation of definitive results is planned in a week.
Most observers are talking about a peaceful election process and a transparent ballot race including European and American observers and government as well.
A face off in a second round will be organised on July 18th if no candidate obtained the absolute majority of the cast.
During the campaign, the Guineans expressed an immense appetite of social justice. Their country, first world exporter of bauxite, has considerable mine resources but half of the 10 million population still lives below the poverty level.
