Burundi: An armed group intercepted by the army

By on July 14, 2010
A combined intervention of the navy and air force intercepted Burundian armed individuals in the territorial waters of Tanganyika Lake, who were heading to the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo, said the National Defence Force spokesman (NDF).

Security issues are taken very seriously by the state of Burundi since the National Liberation Forces’ leader, Agathon Rwasa, disappeared just before the municipal elections of May 24, and contested by the opposition political parties.
The FNL leader is one of the most protestors of the recent elections while he continues to deny the persistent rumours among the populace of his underground activity to revive the rebellion and seize power by arms.
The presumed presence of the former rebel leader, Agathon Rwasa, on the DRC soil to reorganise the rebellion from a foreign land would also be possible, and yet, Rwasa addresses Burundian opinion from his hiding place by secret audio tapes.
