Guinea: Cellou vs. Alpha Condé; who will be the winner?

the Supreme Court of Guinea issued, Tuesday evening, the final results of the first round of the presidential elections held last June 27, After a long delay which had caused some tension building in the country. This announcement confirms Cellou Dalein Diallo who leads, with 43.69% of the votes, followed by Alpha Condé who got 18.25% of the votes, finishing second far from his rival.

The results expressed by the Supreme Court are final and not appealable. Despite the reservations expressed by several candidates who had complained of fraud and asked for the total cancellation of the vote, the Supreme Court held that the first round was valid. However, it canceled the votes in five constituencies: Ratoma, the stronghold of Cellou Dalein Diallo; Matan, the bastion of Sidya Touré; Kankan, Mandiana, the stronghold of Alpha Condé and Lola.
The minutes of the votes in these areas have not been forwarded to the Supreme Court for review, and the date of the second round of the presidential eagerly awaited, has not been announced yet by the Supreme Court. Cellou Dalein Diallo is given now as the big favorite, on the basis of the final results of the first round and he is logically the favorite political personage to be elected next president of Guinea Conakry, but the last decision will come from the second round ballot…
