Guinea Conakry: Go to the second round without undue delay

By on August 5, 2010
“We should not further extend the date of the second round as everyone waits impatiently”, President Blaise Compaoré said in presence of the Guinean acting  president, Sékouba Konaté, his Prime Minister Jean-Marie Doré, the government’s members, the National Council of Transition (CNT), and representatives of political parties. He is calling on the political actors in Guinea and Guinea’s partners to be “urgently” involved in the successful organisation of the second round and under a “short delay”. He also added:” If, you leave much time between the rounds of a major election, you will see the creation of other disappointments that will disrupt the process…”.

The mediator’s visit came one day after the decision of Lansana Kouyaté, ranking fourth in the first round, to support the historical opponent Alpha Condé in the second round. As for Dallen Cellou Diallo, topped first with 40% of the votes, is gaining full support. The recent rallies of Sidya Touré, third with 13.62%, and Abe Sylla (3.23%) are making of him the most favourite in the poll.
However, certain restlessness is evident; suggesting that people have seriously some down feelings and fears about the outcome of this election; and perhaps this status quo is originated from the face-to-face between Diallo and Conté, and if not quickly resolved might inflame again the ethnic tensions already condemned by the Junta Chief. In fact, the more things drag on, the more tension crystallises.
