Zimbabwe: Diplomatic Incident

By on August 11, 2010

Ray Charles and Albrecht Conze, ambassadors of the United States and Germany in Zimbabwe and Barbara Plinkert, the acting representative of the European Union (EU) had left the Sabina Mugabe’s funeral,

sister of President Robert Mugabe. The reason was that the Zimbabwan head of state, voiced in his speech that the Western nations could “go to hell”. He criticised their interference in the internal affairs of Zimbabwe.
The incident might have rested, if the two diplomats had not been called, two days later by the Zimbabwean Minister of Foreign Affairs who critisised, in a blasted manner, their contempt for Zimbabwe’s leaders, for its fallen heroes and its people”. Charles Ray, the American ambassador, told the minister that he was “worsening an already exacerbated problem, created by the Zimbabwean side. He added that “It became clear to me during the speech of your President that I was not welcomed”. I had to react accordingly “.
The reader should not forget that there is a cause to effect down here… President Barack Obama who received, on August the 4th, the young Africans in Washington to mark, in his own way, the fiftieth anniversary of African independence of several countries, said that Robert Mugabe does “not serve its people well”. The U.S president added that “his heart is broken” by the situation in Zimbabwe.
