Rwanda: The Paul Kagamé Victory
He has been acclaimed in this election. He has been praised at home and abroad for stabilising the country, rebuilding its economy and promoting women’s rights. This event is the logical continuation of the achievements undertaken by Kagamé during these last years. He is, wrongly or rightly, sheered by the Anglo-Saxons and the donors, the deserter from the Francophone system to the Commonwealth, and recently instituting the English educational system in the country.
Paul Kagamé is credited with many achievements: the rehabilitation of roads, the electrification of several areas of Rwanda, the improved coverage of schools and clinics. And on top of that, despite the global economic crisis, his country has displayed a growth rate of 7%. But admittedly, this economic boom is largely financed by the illegal exploitation of mineral wealth of the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
His supporters describe him as «the liberator, the builder, and the visionary”, and any “right-thinking” person could only vote for him”.
Nonetheless, the opposition believes the opposite and says that President Kagamé multiplies the disturbing signs of a dictator because with such concrete records and achievements, combined with human, material and financial means, the Kigali man did not need such forfeitures to keep his seat…
Human rights groups say his government has instituted a climate of repression, and the fact remains here that 85% of the population is Hutu, and the government is dominated by Tutsis. It is an uncomfortable reality that speeches alone will not change. However, should one forget, even President Kagamé has effectively been ruling Rwanda since 1994, that the Hutu extremists killed an estimated million Tutsis and moderate Hutus…
