Somalia: Urging the International community for help

The African Commission for Somalia has called for intervention by the international community in Somalia,

stressing that any delay will only aggravate the situation in African countries ravaged by war.

The Special Deputy, Representative and Chairman of the AU Commission on Somalia, Wafula Wamunyinyi said: “We urge the international community to take very seriously the issue of Somalia. It could become a regional threat if we do not solve now ” , he warned. Some two million people, roughly one third of the Somali population, need food aid, according to the U.N report. At least 40% of the Somali population – four million people – is facing a humanitarian crisis, aggravated by the expulsion of the country’s humanitarian agencies, said the A.U official. We strive to expand the relief corridors to allow humanitarian agencies to assist affected populations “, despite the fighting and attacks which continue in Somalia.

Fresh fighting has erupted, on Wednesday morning, in the Somali Capital, between the Islamist insurgents and the government forces backed by troops of the African Union (AMISOM), following the Tuesday’s militant attack on a Mogadishu hotel that killed 31 People. The United States strongly condemned the attack.  The State Department spokesman PJ Crowley said: “the fact that the attack took place during Ramadan highlights al-Shabab’s complete disregard for human life, Somali culture, and Islam”.  But that what Al-Shabab wants – to topple the Somali government and establish a strict Islamic state. It has already imposed harshly conservative Islamic law in the areas under its control. The group announced Monday that it is launching what it calls a new offensive against the Somali government and African Union troops.

Indeed, Al-Shabab wants to topple the Somali government and establish a strict Islamic state. It has already imposed harshly conservative Islamic law in the areas under its control. The group announced Monday that it is launching what it calls a new offensive against the Somali government and African Union troops.
