Guinea Conakry: Beyond commitments

By on September 7, 2010
The election campaign for the second tour of the presidential election in Guinea has started on Sunday.

Both candidates Cellou Dalein Diallo and Alpha Condé have signed, at the invitation of the Burkinabe President and facilitator, Blaise Compaoré, a Memorandum of Understanding in which they make a commitment to lead a calmed  political campaign  and to conform “scrupulously” to the verdict of the ballot boxes. Whatever and what would be the outcome, Guinea will not know any disturbance. In case of any averred fraud, the commitment was made to follow the legal procedure to challenge the results. However, the way is long to go and the process is still in its infancy period. Learning may be painful, but very experiencing and lessons’ learning. Every step constitutes a victory over one’s own shortcomings. Guineans should not forget who they are or forget where they came from. It was long, painful and costliest to get there, and other deadlines are coming, as the legislative and municipal elections, in particular.

The mediator’s call seems to have been heard and welcomed, but everyone must be concerned with the Ouagadougou agreement: the taxpayer, the Guinean politicians, the international community and the mediation. A turning and crucial lap is therefore initiated. It is mostly up to Cellou Dalein Diallo and Alpha Condé to honour their engagements and meet the commitments, hence facing history, Africa and the world. Everyone has probably signed the documents, hoping to be the winner, but not at all the looser, and that is of human nature.

Now it is up to the INEC to take its responsibilities and face the challenges of this delicate phase: the challenges of transparency of an election and the expectations of the Guinean people.
