Guinea: The political storms may wipe away the presidential
Electoral violence that left one person dead and 50 injured during the weekend in Conakry, cast doubts on the possibility of maintaining the second round of presidential elections Sunday,
nearly three months after the first round of the June 27. The two running candidates for the second round, Cellou Dalein Diallo and Alpha Condé, met separately with the transition Prime Minister, Jean-Marie Doré, to discuss the situation, just days before the election. Upon leaving the separate audiences, the two leaders have each promised to do everything to stop the storming political violence and call their supporters for calm. However and following the violence observed on the week-end, the government decided to suspend the campaign and banned all street demonstrations. In theory, no candidate has any interest that the situation escalates, but the two parties are blaming each other for the violence that sparked. Alpha Condé, the candidate of the Rally of the People of Guinea (RPG) had declared that the actual conditions are not suitable to hold the elections on Sunday. He added that the RPG and allied parties, gathered in the “Rainbow Coalition”, are demanding the publication of the electoral roll list and the and installation of new polling stations.
