Guinea: the election page must quickly be turned
Diplomats from the UN, the African Union and ECOWAS met the Election Commission, the various institutions of the transition, General Konaté, Prime Minister Jean-Marie Doré and both candidates Alpha Condé and Cellou Dalein Diallo. A member of that delegation stated that the visit is aiming to save the electoral process and obtain a new schedule for the second round. We hope the postponement will be the last one, he said.
The Electoral Commission, which is plagued by the infighting between Cellou Dalein Diallo’s and Alpha Condé’s supporters, has so far not been able to announce a new date for the second round election, and being expected since two months now. Technically, explains a good source, the CNEI would be quite able to hold the ballot in two weeks, but the general climate is still under the uncertainty. Since last week, no incident took place between the two finalists’ activists, but all the international observers are worried and believe the election page must quickly be turned, otherwise the risk to see the whole process bogged down, with very deep and unpredictable consequences.
