Rwanda: Kigali will not withdraw from Darfur, the UN relieved…
Rwanda was furious at the leak of the UN report accusing its troops of being guilty of genocide in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Kigali has described it as “malicious” and “ridiculous” and said it would review the terms of its cooperation with the United Nations. The 600 pages’ first draft report is accusing the Rwandan troops and their allies, including the Congolese rebels of killing tens of thousands of Hutus after invading the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1996. The threat to withdraw from the UN forces in Darfur has pushed Ban Ki Moon to travel to Rwanda in emergency earlier this month, and the report was postponed until 1 October to enable Rwanda to add comments. Ban Ki-moon and the Rwandan President, Paul Kagame, have met on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. The Secretary General said he was very pleased to learn that Rwanda would continue to play an important role in peacekeeping, particularly in Darfur.
