Western Sahara: the faith of Mustapha Salma, Polisario’s police chief, still uncertain

By on October 12, 2010
tinduffIt has been five days that the Polisario Front announced the future release of Mustapha Salma Ould Sidi Mouloud- head of the police of the movement- who publicly claimed his support for the Moroccan autonomy initiative for Western Sahara, but nobody is able to confirm the whereabouts of the Sahrawi leader. Fears are rising that Ould Salma might not be released despite calls from international NGO’s such as Amnesty International or Human Rights, asking for his immediate release .

Ould Salma, 42, was arrested upon arrival in south-west Algeria-where the Polisario-controlled Tindouf camps are located- under grounds of allegedly being involved in “an operation of espionage in favour of Morocco”. In Early august, Mustapha Salma Ould Sidi Mouloud declared in a press conference in Smara (Western Sahara)  that he would be supporting the Moroccan autonomy plan for Western Sahara , and that he would be ready to defend this option amongst his movement. Polisario front senior officials such as Brahim Ghali or Omar Mansour called M. Ould Sidi Mouloud a “traitor”, and asked that he “would be treated as such”. Following huge international mobilization, Polisario Frente announced the release of Ould Sidi Mouloud, claiming that he would be soon handed to “an international organization interested in his release”. The conflict over Western Sahara started in the mid-70s and is opposing the Kingdom of Morocco and Algeria-backed rebel movement Frente Polisario, who is asking for the right for self-determination for the sahraoui. Morocco is claiming the 100 000 sahraouis are Moroccans and is proposing a large autonomy through which inhabitants of the sahara will self govern under Moroccan sovereignty.
