Niger: What happens within the state Brass?
By African Bulletin on October 15, 2010
The second personality of the ruling military junta, Colonel Abdoulaye Badié, is under arrest and is currently detained at the headquarters. Niamey is at a deep malaise, and the very recent days were marked by very high tension.
Colonel Badié and others officers are accused of attempting to destabilize the military transition. Just before this event, we should remember that on October the 10TH, General Djibo, head of the junta, has sacked, by a decree, the head of the National Guard, abolished the post of the Permanent Secretary therefore occupied by the Colonel Abdoulaye Badié and maintained as an ordinary member the CSRD. Colonel Badié was number two in the regime established after the coup in February against President Tandja (1999-2010). General Djobo has also reactivated the Court of the Military Justice. Many observers wonder if there was a conspiracy against General Djibo to oust him from the transition. Therefore many assumptions can be raised, but could any of them answers what could happen if ever the transition of power to civilians, planned for the 6TH of April 2011, is diverted? Time will say and proves will show up in the light of the investigations. By the way, the weekly independent paper, “Le Canard Déchainé”, has released some information reported to “an attempted coup” in preparation.
