Guinea: Probable postponement of the second round of presidential

By on October 22, 2010

The Malian General, expert in electoral matters, will thus have the difficult task as President of the INEC to monitor the second round of presidential elections in Guinea, scheduled to take place on Sunday.

The tasks that will challenge the new president are complex in time and in nature. The first one is to reconcile the imperatives of time and efficiency. He has to recreate trust, serenity and cohesion within the institution. Then, the General will confront the logistical problems. The deployment of the electoral materials, not yet done, should be made as soon as possible. Finally and above all, the most challenging task is how to deal with bringing the two candidates’ camps to accept the result outcome. For now, the main enemy of the general is the time necessary to organize technically for an acceptable second round. This is most unlikely unfeasible, because of electoral equipment robberies and the pessimistic report that the INEC members have returned to the interim President Konaté. Many challenges and only two days to finalise the electoral machinery, unless a further extension, which was released in the air, with the suggestion of Bernard Kouchner, the head of French diplomacy to hold the election on October 31 and finally see the military return power to the civilians.
