Kenya: Nairobi mayor arrested for bribery
The mayor of the Kenyan capital, Geoffrey Majiwa, was arrested on corruption charges involving more than 3.54 million US dollars, the Anti Corruption Agency said.
Mr Majiwa was arrested at his residence in Nairobi by Officials from the Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission (KACC), to be questioned as authorities are finalizing their investigation into a scandal involving a cemetery. The commission says Majiwa and other 13 officials conspired to steal this big amount of money from the Ministry of Local Government through a fraudulent land deal. The mayor is scheduled to appear in court. His indictment is prepared and will have to answer two charges of corruption in connection with the scandal. He will also be charged for wilful neglect of official duties. Simani said anti-corruption agency investigators had recorded a statement from the mayor shortly after his arrest. The mayor is likely to be released, under conditions to appear later in court for judgment. Kenya continues to be plagued by widespread corruption, therefore the anti-corruption group Transparency International ranked Kenya 146th out of 180 countries in its annual corruption perceptions index.
