Burundi: Restructuring the agricultural sector

burundiThe revival of local economies and reducing significantly the incidence of poverty require the mobilisation of funding to address the pressing problem of poverty. The Burundian Government therefore hopes that the international community to consolidate the gains of the country through substantial aid to rehabilitate the people of Burundi in their aspirations of well being and economic vitality. For this, the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has launched an action plan with a total budget of 61 million U.S. dollars in the agricultural sector.

The action plan is in response to key factors that have caused food insecurity in recent years in the country. According to Aloys Nizigiyimana, FAO expert, these factors are mainly the consequences of the crisis, including the repatriation of Burundians who need support for recovery, in dignity, of farming, the response to the negative effects of the climate change and preparing people, especially the most vulnerable who are affected, and the effect of limiting access to land. 250 000 households in 17 provinces of Burundi are concerned by the plan. Recently, some donor countries are focusing on the  Burundian agricultural sector, like Belgium that  initiated a project to support agricultural development in the  province of Cibitoke (west), with an amount of 5 million Euros for four years. Its Ambassador, Josef Smetzer, announced that his country has provided for the Burundian agricultural sector an envelope of 49 million Euros for 2010-2011.
