Guinea: October 31, the might be Election Day

By on October 28, 2010
The Independent National Electoral Commission has proposed that the second round of the presidential election takes place this Sunday. The announcement was made by General Siaka Sangaré Toumani.

The proposal is submitted to the transitional president, who will or not endorse it by decree. According to the INEC new president, this date was proposed after extensive consultation with all political actors in Guinea. The candidate Alpha Condé declared that he has “no objection” with this date, while his opponent in this second round is showing some restraint. For Cellou Dalein Diallo, this date is too close, he said. It takes time to heal the wounds and restore trust between citizens and communities. The UFDG candidate added that due to the recent violence, a massive population displacement had occurred and many voters will not be able to vote if the election takes place on Sunday. On June the 27TH, the first round of the most democratic election ever held was organised, and Cellou Dalein Diallo and Alpha Condé had then qualified for the second round with 43% and 18% of the vote. Since then, the differences in the INEC as well as the acts of political violence are still postponing the election to resume, and give a free elected president to lead the country for a better future.
