Guinea: the suspicion and uncertainty remain over the elections

By on November 1, 2010

The joint tour of reconciliation scheduled for Thursday has been canceled. Alpha Condé has accepted to participate, with his rival Cellou Dalein Diallo to restore confidence between the Fulani and the Malinke ethnic groups to whom they belong.

But at the request of his base, accusing the supporters of the UFDG of attempting to poison some RPG activists, Alpha Condé has finally given up and abandoned to participate to the tour. The origin of these accusations is due to some malaises of nausea and vomiting felt by Alpha Condé’s supporters, after drinking water at a rally. However, a doctor has stated no deaths or serious cases have been identified, but can not speak of poisoning, we can only speak of food poisoning, he added. The RPG militants have quickly accused the Fulani of poisoning them, resulting in attacks against their community in Conakry and in the East. The RPG party officials have demanded an investigation and require an explanation from the opposite camp. We do not want to inflame the situation, but we must speak of this issue of intoxication and resolve the problem between the various camps, Francois Fall, the spokesman for Alpha Condé’s Alliance voiced. Far from contradicting the rumors, the people of Guinea has been waiting, over four months now, and do not know whether the crucial second round of presidential elections will be taking place. Fears are raising among the observers that another delay could upset the fragile transition, if ever some probable shortfalls, resulting from such scenarios like these alleged poisoning accusations, come to bring more truth and clear willingness to jeopardize the continuation of the process.
