Central African Republic: 6 candidates for the presidential
Among the six, there is the current head of state François Bozizé, the candidate of the ruling party KNK ( work just work), the former President Ange-Felix Patassé, registered as an independent candidate, and Jean-Jacques Démafouth, leader of the rebel movement of the Popular Army for the Restoration of Democracy (APRD). The registration period was planned to start from November 8 to December 10, but the IEC has reduced the registration period from 31 to 12 days, ending on November 8. This decision has followed a meeting between François Bozizé, the political actors, the civil society and the diplomatic corps, but was denounced and rejected by the opposition and the former rebels. The legislative and the presidential elections are postponed to January 23, 2011 after having been postponed numerous times, and should renew the mandates of the deputies and the President of the Republic, which ended in June 2010. The organization of the election has been plagued by difficulties, and the opposition, feeling that the proper conditions for an election do not exist, has continually demanded its postponement. For the government, hope is expressed to see that the broad political agreement on the January 2011 date would mean that international financial assistance for the election would come soon.
