Guinea: Diallo suspends its participation in the Counting

Mr. Diallo has sent letters to the president of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), General Siaka Sangaré and the interim president, General Konaté, asking them “to postpone the publication of the provisional results until an objective treatment of the various claims.

He declared finding massive fraud at all levels, even within the computerised system counting, and the party would not accept the integration into the overall results of the electoral votes of Siguiri and Kouroussa (Upper Guinea), two strongholds of his opponent Alpha Condé. Mr. Diallo was questioned if he doesn’t fear that violence might break out again, but his answer was that the right and truth must win. I do not launch an appeal for an up rise. For now I call for calm and restraint, he added. From their side, the International observers have estimated that the second round of the presidential elections, which opposed Alpha Condé and Cellou Dalein Diallo, had been free and fair, and according to the partial results yet reported, less than four-point gap is separating the two candidates in the second round, turning the Guinea’s presidential election in an increasingly tight race to choose a new civilian leader. Cellou Dalein Diallo was credited with 51.8% of the votes against 48.2% to his opponent Alpha Condé, but the results of several bastions of Condé have not yet been announced.
