Guinea: State of emergency and curfew

The state of emergency is declared in Guinea.The emergency measure, with a night curfew will remain in force until confirmation of final results.
Guinea’s electoral law gives the Supreme Court until next Tuesday to certify provisional results that show long-time opposition leader Alpha Condé defeating former Prime Minister Cellou Diallo. The victory announcement of the opponent Condé, with 52.5% of the votes, was followed by clashes in some parts of the country, particularly in Conakry, the capital, amid ethnic tensions. There were a dozen deaths across the country and two hundred and fifteen wounded including the thirty-six who were hospitalised, the pan-African organisation said. In order to preserve peace, calm and national unity, a state of emergency was declared until the announcement of the final results of the second round of the presidential election by the Supreme Court, the army chief, Nouhou Thiam, said. He added that the army had been deployed in reinforcement to the police forces. The police now have powers to deal with the situation. Meanwhile, Alpha Condé is calling for Cellou Dalein Diallo and raises the possibility of establishing a common agenda to get out the country from poverty. Nonetheless, a relative peace is reigning today in the city center of Conakry and the activities started again with the opening of certain public and private services.
