In a statement, Mr. Condé said he has stressed, during his campaign, on the notion of forgiveness, because the country has been through a lot “since its independence in 1958, he said.

There was a lot of resentment and the country cannot thrive on resentment. He added after a meeting with leaders of the National Transitional Council (CNT): I hope, with the help of the clergy, we will organise a conference of truth and reconciliation so that the Guineans themselves will talk and say the truth “about the crimes committed throughout the history of the independent Guinea. The goal is not to take people to court or settle any “old accounts”, but only exchange talks and tell each other  truth and assume our common history, said Condé, who also wished to fight against the impunity. It is necessary, we are not going for a “witch hunt”, we want just put an end to impunity for those (generations) who will follow us and not start the same thing. Having never participated in any government in place, Mr. Condé has been a victim of repression. He was sentenced to death in absentia and imprisonment in 2000. Alpha Condé has often said his model was Nelson Mandela, the hero of the anti-apartheid and the first black president of South Africa.
