Africa: Special program of aquaculture

The representative of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Senegal, Amadou Ouattara, has announced that a Special Programme for Aquaculture Development in Africa (SPADA) is about to be implemented. Speaking at the opening of a training workshop on rice and aquaculture in West Africa, the FAO representative, said that creating the program, which aims to improve growth economy on the continent in rural areas, responds to the member states request of the organisation. Thus, the representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Dakar, Okubo Hisatoshi, said the Japanese agency cooperation has decided to develop a strategy for aquaculture development, specific to the Sub-Saharan countries, and expected to be finalised in March 2011. Mr. Hisatoshi stressed that this is an area that is just beginning to develop in Africa and is facing many difficulties such as Feed and seed supply. Food is a major issue in Africa, fish is the main source of animal protein for the African people, he said. To this end, he added that the Japanese government is engaged on issues related to aquaculture and has implemented projects in this area in Benin, Burkina Faso and Madagascar soon. This fourth workshop of the FAO meet until December the 17th, allowing the representatives of all member countries of the organisation, JICA and the Coalition for Rice Development in Africa (CARD), to share and exchange mutual experiences and contribute to poverty reduction, food security and economic development through increased production and agricultural productivity in Sub Sahara Africa.
