Togo: tourism revenue up by 56% thanks to political stability

faure_goodAs a key part of Faure Gnassingbe’s campaign program during the spring 2010 presidential election, tourism is belied to have a strong boost in 2010, thanks to political stability. According to Bloomberg news agency, tourism minister Batienne Kpabre-Silly said he is expecting 300 000 visitors in 2011, compared to 180 000 in 2010. Kpabre-Silly is also expecting a raise in revenue for a grand total of approximately 50 million US dollars.

During his campaign, President Faure Gnassingbe asserted his strong will to modernize Togos’ tourism, and to develop a new offer that is more respectful of the environment. Adding to the good news, Barcelona-based gaming company Prefaco announced that it will invest 20 billion CFA francs in order to build a five-star hotel. It is also expected that President Faure Gnassingbe will unveil sometimes next spring a comprehensive plan “that will involve the listing of places of interest for tourists, the refurbishment of hotels and a marketing campaign”. On a regional perspective, although president Faure Gnassingbe was not part of the trip that led three heads of state (Benin, Cabo Verde and Sierra Leone)  to Abidjan in order to try to reason Laurent Gbagbo, observers believes that Togos’ president, Faure Gnassingbe, played a “key role” in terms of agenda-setting for the conflict resolution in Ivory Coast.
