Algerian-French navies begin annual bilateral exercise

The French and Algerian navies launched naval surveillance and sea rescue
exercises codenamed “Rais Hamidou 11” with the participation of key naval vessels and long-range patrol aircrafts, reports US defence Magazine in its latest issue.

The joint exercise, to run through April 12th between the French ports of Toulon and Algiers, is destined to improve operational coordination between the two countries navies and enhance their joint readiness capacities to respond to eventual crisis situations.
Dubbed “Rais Hamidou 11”, name of the last of the great leaders of the Algerian navy of the Ottoman period, this ten-days exercise is part of a bilateral defence co-operation agreement signed on 21 June 2008.
It aims is to develop interoperability between the navy units and share know-how and experience in dealing with crisis situations such as pollution, the loss at sea or illicit trafficking.
The  navy drills, to strengthen cohesion between the two countries’ crews, include operations at sea, workshops, conferences, courses, joint aero-maritime surveillance, interception and assistance operations.
